On 11 September, The Helmsman Project Youth Board was given the opportunity to run a two-hour workshop with 60 professionals from Macquarie Bank global offices as part of their annual team learning and development week.
The session started with an introduction by the Macquarie Foundation and an overview of The Helmsman Project by CEO Kim Larochelle. This followed by a Q&A with the Youth Board members, two graduates of our program and a supporting teacher from Cumberland High School. The panel provided well-rounded and inspirational discussions on their journeys with The Helmsman Project and the impact their participation has had on their outlook on life.
Following this, the group was divided among 10 tables and each was tasked with the mission to develop content in the form of videos, podcasts or documents for what will become The Helmsman Project alumni portal. Each of the 10 topics on which content was developed had been identified by the Youth Board as pivotal challenges faced by young people, being applicable to the workplace or other areas of their lives.
Our Helmsman Project representatives supported the groups throughout the session, challenging their thinking, answering questions, brainstorming alongside them.
At the end of the workshop, each team brilliantly pitched their ideas to the entire group. The Youth Board had the very challenging task of choosing winners to be awarded newly released Macquarie-branded takeaway cups. With their fun presentation and a practical template for a 15- to 20-year-old to use, the team tasked with developing tips for budgeting took out the victory!
The session was a unique and extremely valuable experience for our Youth Board and graduates to interact with professionals from around the world. The content generated will be very useful to the Youth Board in further developing an alumni platform to create a place for graduates to continue to learn and network with each other. A massive thank you to Macquarie Bank for giving us this opportunity and to all participants for your valuable, original and experienced insights.
