Support Growth

Become a School Partner

We partner with schools to provide students with the support and opportunities to realise their potential.

We make a difference in the lives of young people through innovative evidence-based programs combining developmental coaching, adventure education and the design and implementation of a community project.

Our programs are designed by experts and backed by science, so we can positively impact young people and the communities in which they live. Our programs have been the subject of an Australia Research Council funded randomised control trial research project in partnership with the Institute of Positive Psychology in Education (ACU).

Working through an experiential learning model and theories of positive development, our team of professional coaches provide support and challenge to our young participants.

Coaches help them identify changes they want to make for themselves, their community and the future, and develop the self-regulation and resilience to work towards achieving their self-determined goals.

Graduates of our program experience many positive outcomes, including taking up leadership roles in their school, often reporting they would not have had the confidence to do so before participating on The Helmsman Project. You can read stories on the impact of our programs here.

"I have seen many programs in my 25 years of teaching in public schools.
But none have impacted my students more than The Helmsman Project.
It is truly a life-changing program, the positive effects of which have filtered
through the school and local community in a way I could not have imagined
when I became involved in the pilot program in 2013... I hope that in the
years to come, The Helmsman Project can offer this rich and fulfilling program
to more schools around Australia, so more young people experiencing hardship
and disadvantage can gain the skills that will help them reach their full potential.
Thanks to the passion and commitment of The Helmsman Project’s volunteers
and funders, I am confident that this hope will become a reality."
